UCLA Special Session

Friday, May 22nd, 2009: Your Attendance is Important!

Please join us for the “UCLA Special Session” on behalf of the Collaborative Law Institute of Minnesota. Your presence at this milestone marker in the history of Collaborative Practice is urgently requested.

The purpose of the Uniform Collaborative Law Act (UCLA) is to support the growth and development of Collaborative Practice by making it more accessible and uniform. It is expected that “making collaborative law more broadly and uniformly available will give parties another choice of dispute resolution options to meet their needs. The act will thus increase the likelihood that disputes will be resolved earlier in their life cycle, at less economic and emotional cost.”

As an Institute we need to make a collective decision to support the Uniform Collaborative Law Act (UCLA) and how that can best be done. The next step for the UCLA is approval by the Uniform Law Commissioners and the American Bar Association House of Delegates. The UCLA will then be presented to individual state legislatures to make it the law of each state. We hope Minnesota (home of Stu Webb, founder of collaborative law) will be in the vanguard of Collaborative Practice as the first state legislature to enact the UCLA into state law.

We are pleased to have with us special guests:

Harry L. Tindall, Esq. Member of the UCLA Drafting Committee

Harry Tindall, who established Collaborative Practice in Texas and who prompted the drafting of the UCLA, will answer our questions, explain the ramifications of the Act, and discuss what we can do to insure its passage by the ABA House of Delegates.

Marcia Avner

Legislative Coordinator from the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits Marcia Avner will talk about strategies to enact the UCLA in Minnesota.
